Histogram is one of the most important evaluation charts that allows you to examine and understand the photo in detail during or after the photo shoot.
In fact, the histogram, which is a mathematical term, is nothing more than a graphic of pixels created with light values in the field of photography. In this way, you can make quick values of your photos and adjust the camera settings accordingly to review the light values.
When we look at the word histogram as meaning, we can explain it as “creating a graph with vertical rectangular columns” formed by the combination of the Greek words histos and gramma. Now let’s look at the uses of histogram in photography.
How To Use A Histogram In A Photo
We try to control the light that falls on the sensor with shutter speed, which is one of the main photography techniques and is one of the 3 basic components of ISO and aperture. Our goal here is to check whether the correct amount of light in the photograph is taken in the right amount of time, in other words, the correct exposure.
After taking the photo, we look at the camera’S LCD screen to see if the picture is correctly exposed. In fact, this image that appears to us visually, unfortunately, can be misleading.
Instead, a graph showing maths how light values are generated will always give the correct answer. Before we proceed, another result revealed here is that we can decide on the LCD screen only if the frame is in balance.
You did your photo shoot, and then when you look at the histogram, the intensity on the left is low exposure, which means dark, and the intensity on the right is too bright, which means you are taking an overexposed shot. A distribution in the middle of the chart will show the correct exposure.
Is There A Good Histogram?
In the Histogram chart, the light value that goes from left to right increases from 0 to 255. That is, if there is a high in the axis 0, it tries to tell us the pixels that are not taken in detail. We can talk about a similar situation for the right side 255 light value. If there’s height in this section, it’s trying to tell us that there are exploded pixels.
The example above gives us a general overview of the image of a histogram, while trying to explain how light values are created.
But to answer the question we ask ourselves, there is no such thing as a perfect histogram. However, a graphic that appears as a bell curve shows you at least the correct exposure in terms of light values. And remember, the histogram of each photo is different.
